People in the Cuban capital of Havana are learning to cycle. This is because it is harder to find petrol in Cuba after the US took over Venezuela’s oil.
Venezuela used to be the main country supplying oil to Cuba. But that changed when the US captured Venezuela’s leader, Nicolas Maduro, in January.
Mexico also stopped shipping fuel to Cuba after the US threatened tariffs on countries supplying oil to Cuba.
The UN has warned of the potential for humanitarian “collapse” if Cuba’s fuel supplies are not restored. A panel of UN human rights experts has said the US fuel blockade breaks international law.
For Gabriela Barbon, 23, transport is getting too pricey. That is why she is learning to ride a bike. She went to a training session hosted by a local group.
“Riding a bike is no longer just a hobby ... It’s a necessity,” she said.
