Neptune: The impact of a day without electricity would vary significantly depending on the season and the location. For instance, if it were winter in London, the nighttime would likely be the most challenging, as a lack of electricity means no heating, which would be quite uncomfortable due to the cold. However, right now, we are in Hong Kong, where the temperature is around 30 degrees Celsius every day. In this heat, enduring the scorching, humid afternoons without air conditioning would feel like being stuck in a large sauna for too long. It’s worth noting that it’s generally easier to suffer from heatstroke than from hypothermia, so staying cool would be a major concern. Additionally, without electricity, ice cream and cold drinks would be inaccessible, making the afternoons quite uncomfortable. On the other hand, the nighttime would be more bearable. Although there would be no artificial light, we could always channel our inner cavemen and use fire as a light source. From candlelit dinners to refreshing baths or showers, a lack of electricity might even allow us to romanticise life a bit more.
Mercury: Boom! The lights went out immediately. Terrified, I would instinctively shrink down and hug my parents. Since childhood, I have suffered from severe nyctophobia; darkness plunges me into sheer horror. A day without electricity would be absolute torment. The hardest part would be the overwhelming anxiety and constant, nagging fear that prevents me from completing daily tasks or sleeping soundly. However, the easiest part of this experience would be the forced break from digital distractions. Without the glare of screens or the buzz of notifications, my life would become completely quiet. This sudden silence would encourage my family to gather around candlelight, sharing stories and laughter. Ultimately, the very darkness that triggers my deepest fears would also create an opportunity to bond with my loved ones and find safety in their presence.
Mars: A day without electricity would be both exhausting and challenging. The most difficult aspect would be enduring the physical and mental discomfort. Staying in a stuffy room without air conditioning would be unbearable, and the intense anxiety of being disconnected from my friends would only add to my distress. I would constantly wonder what they were discussing and dread missing out on their gossip the following day. Feeling restless without my usual entertainment would make the hours drag on painfully. On the other hand, the easiest part would be the sudden boost in my productivity. Without the distraction of my phone, all interruptions would vanish. Knowing that nights would leave me with no light or that using candles would only make the room hotter, I would naturally work much faster. It would become surprisingly effortless to focus and complete all my tasks before sunset, demonstrating that a digital break can simplify life.
Jupiter: Hong Kong boasts one of the most efficient power supply systems in the world, yet I was surprised to find myself without electricity for nearly a day a few months ago. One Sunday, my building experienced a maintenance issue that caused a power outage. Those hours without power brought my family closer together. With no electricity, we turned to books, played board games, and engaged in conversations to replace our usual screen time. The hardest part was enduring the summer heat without air conditioning, which led us to fan ourselves and search for forgotten power banks to recharge our portable fans and emergency lights. During this time, I thought of my grandparents in India, who grew up without smartphones and continue to live freely without constant connectivity. They find entertainment in spending time with friends and family, a quality I aspire to cultivate. Let’s disconnect from our devices and reconnect with our loved ones because the cherished moments we share are far more valuable than any photo.
Venus: A sudden blackout that leaves us without electricity can turn an ordinary day into an unexpected adventure. The easiest part would be the break from screens. With no Wi-fi, my school’s online portal would be completely inaccessible. That means no homework notifications, no deadlines on Google Classroom and no emails about school. For a few blissful hours, I could imagine myself as a poet, reading a book by the window like a mysterious main character. However, the hardest part would hit when reality set in. Facing a completely dead phone would trigger panic, leaving me totally cut off from my social media and friends. In today’s world, staying in the loop is essential. On top of that, without air conditioning, my room would quickly turn into a sauna, making me a sweaty, dramatic mess. Surviving this challenge would definitely not be easy.
