Difficulty: Challenger (Level 2)
Have you ever thought about what you want to be when you grow up?
Maybe you dream of being a pilot, a doctor or a famous singer. Those are wonderful dreams, but have you ever noticed the people who drive the MTR trains, sell fish in the wet market or sweep the leaves off your street?
They have fascinating jobs as well. Every single one helps Hong Kong run smoothly.
Hong Kong is a special place with so many unique jobs you might not have thought about. These include the fishermen in Sai Kung who bring us fresh fish and the farmers in the New Territories who grow vegetables and rice.
Some people even have jobs making lucky red envelopes or printing beautiful Chinese New Year decorations.
There are rare and surprising jobs found around the world. For example, have you heard of an island caretaker who lives alone on a tropical island and posts videos of the ocean?
Some people test video games for a living. Others travel the world tasting chocolate. And in very cold places, there are ice hotel architects who carve towering sculptures and even entire hotels out of snow and ice every year!

Isn’t it amazing how many different and unusual ways there are to work and help others?
Here is the most exciting part: the world is changing so fast that when you grow up, there will be jobs that haven’t even been invented yet. Maybe you could be a drone traffic controller, a virtual reality designer or a space tour guide.
And best of all, you don’t have to wait for someone to invent a job for you – you can create a job for yourself by starting your own business.
As you grow up, remember that there is no such thing as a small or unimportant job. Everyone plays a part in our big, beautiful Hong Kong family.
Whether you become a doctor or a delivery driver, a teacher or a trash collector, your work matters, and you matter. And the best thing you can do is to notice all the amazing people around you and say, “Thank you for helping our city shine.”
