Wildfires on the island of Maui, in the US state of Hawaii, unleashed destruction on the historic town of Lahaina. It will take billions of dollars to rebuild it.
Hawaii governor Josh Green said the blaze turned Lahaina into ruins. It was the worst natural disaster in the state’s history, leaving thousands of people homeless and destroying 1,000 buildings.
“It’s going to take many years to rebuild Lahaina,” he told reporters.
Officials are making a plan to shelter the many homeless people in hotels.
The wildfires were fuelled by hot, dry weather and gusts of wind which blew at 100kph.
