A study from Osaka University in Japan suggests that brushing our teeth doesn’t just keep our teeth clean – it’s also good for our hearts.

Researchers studied 1,675 people who went to Osaka University Hospital between 2013 and 2016. They divided them into groups based on their brushing habits: brushing twice daily, once at night, only in the morning, or not at all.

They found that cardiovascular patients – people who have problems with their heart and blood vessels, such as heart attacks and strokes – who brushed their teeth twice daily or once at night had a better chance of surviving than those who didn’t brush their teeth at all.

They also found that brushing our teeth at night is just as important as brushing our teeth in the morning because the bacteria in our mouth can grow in our sleep.
