A woman in Poland has earned the nickname “Bat-mum” for taking care of ailing bats.
Barbara Gorecka is 69 years old. Over 16 years, she and other volunteers have taken care of about 1,600 animals.
To Gorecka, there is a link between climate change and the increasing number of bats that need help in her shelter.
She explained how they would wake up too early from their wintertime rest, known as hibernation: “With the warm weather ... they think that spring is already here and there will be food. Unfortunately, they lose so much energy that they can’t even fly any more.”
She works with volunteers who help her with the sanctuary. Each bat has a name, feeding routine and medicine plan.
“I must admit that I simply love them,” Gorecka said.
Experts remind people to leave it to professionals to take care of injured bats.
