The Moomins, a beloved cartoon family from Finland, are celebrating their 80th anniversary this year.
The cute, round Moomin characters have been loved by readers around the world since Tove Jansson released The Moomins and the Great Flood in 1945.
The series is set in the fictional Moominvalley. It has been translated into more than 60 languages and inspired movie and TV adaptations, children’s plays, art gallery exhibitions and a museum. There are also theme parks in Finland and Japan, and the merchandise is hugely popular.
Last month, fans gathered in Tampere in southern Finland – home of the Moomin Museum. They were there to celebrate the 80th anniversary of the 1945 publication as well as Jansson’s birthday.
