In 2022, clips of A Tapestry of a Legendary Land went viral online, showing the popularity of Chinese folk dance drama, known as wuju in Mandarin.
The number of new productions has now grown very quickly. Young audiences love the “Eastern aesthetics” of these silent performances that showcase traditional Chinese costumes.
Since its 2021 stage debut, A Tapestry of a Legendary Land has been performed over 700 times in more than 70 cities in China and beyond. Combined ticket sales have reached 500 million yuan (US$70 million or HK$546.6 million). On Douyin, the Chinese version of TikTok, its hashtag has received 1.6 billion views.
Hanfu – traditional Chinese costume – has also seen a rise in popularity among young people.
Across the country, it is common to see people proudly strolling through the streets or at historic sites dressed in beautifully embroidered hanfu robes and decorative headpieces.
