Taylor Swift fans are arriving in droves at a German museum to see a portrait of Ophelia, a character from Shakespeare's Hamlet. The character has risen in popularity due to a mention in a song and a reimagining of her in a music video from Swift’s new album, The Life of a Showgirl.
In the opening scene of the video for “The Fate of Ophelia”, Swift takes on the character and becomes a living painting.
Museum Wiesbaden said it was not clear which painting served as inspiration. But when compared side by side, the video looks very similar to Ophelia, an oil painting by German artist Friedrich Heyser. Last month, the museum saw hundreds of “Swifties” – Swift fans – wanting to see that painting. The museum invited fans to attend a special tour, and the news went viral online.
