Zootopia 2 has become the highest-grossing animated foreign film in China, even though people there usually show less interest in movies from other countries.

In the first six days of the film’s release, the box office tracker Maoyan showed its local box office tally reaching 1.95 billion yuan (HK$2.15 billion).

Zootopia 2 made up about 95 per cent of all movie ticket sales in the first weekend it was shown in cinemas in China.

A lot has changed for foreign films in China since the first Zootopia came out. The original Zootopia was the most popular foreign animated film in China when it was released in 2016.

But the success of Zootopia 2 is especially impressive because recently, local movies in China have been doing better than Hollywood films.

Earlier this year, the Chinese animation Ne Zha 2 made more money than Pixar’s Inside Out 2. It was the most successful animated film ever, making almost US$2 billion (HK$15.6 billion) in China.
