More and more foreign travellers have been coming to China in recent years, especially those seeking medical treatment. The trend has recently attracted attention online after overseas bloggers began sharing their experiences.

One case involved a British woman named Amie, who said she travelled to China to treat a stomach problem.

Amie said she could not see a doctor at home because of long waiting lists in the UK’s public healthcare system. She flew to Beijing and made an appointment at a major hospital. She received her report a week later, and the whole treatment lasted 12 days, according to her viral videos.

Her medical costs totalled 2,800 yuan (HK$3,167). A single endoscope test costs between £3,000 and £5,000 (HK$31,638 to HK$52,730) at private clinics in the United Kingdom.

Such trips are made easier thanks to China’s visa-free rules. At present, China allows 240-hour visa-free transit stays for residents from 55 countries.
