A monster pumpkin weighing the same as a hippopotamus has claimed the world record for the heaviest gourd.

Its grower, Travis Gienger, won US$30,000 (HK$234,639) for his mega-gourd at the Half Moon Bay Pumpkin Festival in the US state of California.

His enormous fruit weighed 2,749 pounds (1,247kg). To get the world record, he beat an Italian gourd from 2021 that weighed 2,703 pounds.

The contest is in its 50th year; farmers in North America compete to see who can produce the biggest gourd.
