Advice: I can’t keep up with my classmates in school, and I feel lost and sad

It is frustrating when you are not doing as well as your classmates. Some people care a lot about grades, and this can put pressure on you to excel.

It is OK to feel disappointed when you do not do well. Comparing yourself to others can encourage you to do better, but it can also make you feel bad about yourself. Remind yourself of your positive qualities – and if you struggle to think of these, it can help to ask a loved one.

Sometimes, you need to focus on your own goals and hobbies instead. How do you want to improve? What steps can you take towards that? You could even ask a classmate to study with you. Don’t forget to balance your academics with hobbies that give you time to relax.

If you still find yourself feeling discouraged by your progress, talk to a parent or teacher. They can find ways to help you feel better and work on your goals.

Talk it out

  • Do you ever feel discouraged by how you are doing in school? Do you think anyone else might feel the same way?

  • What is something you can say to a classmate who is struggling to keep up? How can you help them?

Every week, we share advice from our team of psychologists to help you through all the ups and downs of life.
