Serious topics are never easy to discuss, even with parents. We might have a hard time putting our feelings into words, and it can be scary to be vulnerable.
First, think about why you feel nervous. Are you worried about disappointing your parents? Are you embarrassed about sharing personal information? Have they done or said anything before to make you feel this way?
Share this when you speak to them, so they know how their words and actions affect you. What could they do to help you feel more comfortable discussing serious issues?
Next, think about what you want your parents to do. Do you want their help, or do you just need someone to talk to? Practising the conversation in your head or with a friend before talking to your parents can also help you feel more confident.
When you talk to your parents, pick a time when they are not busy, such as after dinner or on a Sunday afternoon.
Remember, your parents likely want to know what is happening, so we hope you can take the step to share your feelings with them.
