Negative emotions like frustration and jealousy are completely normal feelings. However, long periods of these feelings can make us dislike ourselves and others.

They could be the result of specific events, but can also be internal issues like insecurity or feeling like you don’t belong.

Here are a few things you can do next time you feel this way:

1. Recognise and acknowledge your emotions. Try to find out why or when you feel this way so you can prepare for it beforehand. For example, you might realise you get in a bad mood when a specific topic is brought up, like your friend’s good grades.

2. Talk to someone you trust. This will help you understand your feelings better.

3. Try pleasant activities like reading, walking or listening to music. Do things you enjoy or try something new.

4. Whenever you feel like you’re in a bad mood, make a list in your head of what you’re grateful for. Take a deep breath and try to focus on the positive aspects of the situation.

Talk to a trusted adult if you continue to have trouble with these feelings. They can help you find a balance between your negative and positive emotions.

Talk it out

Though it is easy to be jealous of someone else’s accomplishments, it is also easy to forget your own. What are some things that you are proud of or thankful for?
