Advice: I feel bad about my body, and my classmates call me names behind my back

It’s really frustrating when people judge others just by how they look.

It can be even worse when movies, TV shows, and social media make it seem like being beautiful is the most important thing, and they only show one idea of what beauty is. This can hurt people’s self-esteem and make them feel down about themselves.

Here are some things you can do to feel better.

Learn to like your body

Instead of focusing on the things you don’t like about your body, try to focus on what you like, such as how you move or smile.

You can also say some positive phrases to yourself, such as: “People can be happy and pretty at any size.”

Eating healthy and exercising are important, but instead of focusing on weight, think about things like being able to run for longer without feeling tired. Appreciate what your body can do for you instead of punishing it.

Be with friends who treat you well

It is not right that your classmates talk about you behind your back. Real friends will always show you respect, acceptance and support. Surround yourself with people who make you feel valued and uplifted.

Always remember that being a kind, compassionate and loving person is far more important than focusing on how you look on the outside. We are confident that you will find friends who appreciate your true self rather than judging you based on your looks.

If you need help, don’t be afraid to ask for it. Talk to a parent, teacher or counsellor about your feelings.

Talk it out

  • What do you like about your body? What activities does your body help you do?

  • Why is it important to focus on the things you like about yourself, even if it’s hard?
