Social anxiety is very stressful. We’re so sorry that your dad does not understand. It’s not fair for him to be frustrated with you.
Have you spoken to him about your anxiety? It may be helpful to sit down with him and explain your feelings. Do it when everyone is in a good mood, and there aren’t any upcoming social situations.
Explain that your anxiety issues go further than being shy or nervous. Tell your dad that you genuinely find it difficult to cope in some social situations.
You can tell him you want to learn to be more confident, but it isn’t as easy as simply saying, “I will be more confident now.” Hearing your explanation could help him understand you more.
Talking to a doctor or therapist with your father could be a big help, too.
It would give you a chance to share your feelings and worries. It could also help your father understand your social anxiety. This way, you can learn how to manage it together.
