Advice: I no longer enjoy playing the piano

It’s normal for your interests to change, so don’t be afraid. Photo: Shutterstock

Sometimes, we like a hobby more or less over time. It’s good that you’re noticing this and thinking about it.

There can be many reasons why people might stop playing a musical instrument. Maybe they’re too tired and need a break, or they do not like the song they’re practising. The song might be too hard and frustrating to learn, or they might find something else they enjoy more. They might even realise that playing an instrument isn’t what they want to do.

Take a break from playing the piano. Rest for a while and think about why you started playing in the first place. Play a song you really like and see if it’s still fun. If you’re working on a complex song or learning something new, play an easy song before and after. This is like having a starter and dessert.

You can also work on the piano for a shorter time and do something else you like. Watch videos of pianists you admire. This will help you understand why you might not enjoy playing any more, and once you know why, you’ll know what to do next.

If practising a song makes you not enjoy playing the piano any more, you can find ways to stay motivated. If you do not like playing the piano any more, that’s OK. Talk to your parents and see if they can help you find a new hobby that you want.

This question was answered by San Hung, a registered counselling psychologist (HKPS) and secondary school counsellor.

Talk it out

  • What is your favourite hobby, and why?

  • What do you do when you make a mistake or something doesn’t go as planned with your hobby?
