Sometimes, when we are stressed, our bodies may react in ways we cannot control. Biting our nails is one of those ways. It’s like a habit that can help us feel better when we’re anxious. You can talk to an adult or professional to see how they can help you.
There are also some things that you can do to stop yourself from biting and picking at your nails so often.
Keep a small pair of nail scissors handy to remove any dry skin instead of peeling it off. If you have cuts, put some cuticle oil, Vaseline, or a similar balm on and around your nails to make them feel better.
This will also help keep the skin around your nails from getting dry, making you less likely to pick at them.
When you feel the urge to bite your nails, try to relax. You can do this by taking deep breaths and counting to 10, squeezing a stress ball, or simply washing your hands. When you wash your hands often, you start to pay more attention to your hands and how they touch things. This helps you notice when you want to bite your nails.
It might take some time to stop biting your nails completely, but keep trying to change a little bit at a time. Don’t get upset if you don’t stop immediately, and keep trying your best!
