More than 2,500 years ago, a wise man named Confucius lived in China. He is also known as Kongzi. He was born Kongqiu in 551BC in eastern China.

Back then, the country was filled with fighting and chaos. Confucius wondered how to make communities peaceful again. He believed that respect was key to creating people who could help improve society.

Confucius wanted to change the world by being a public official. But he found more success as a teacher. His students recorded his lessons in The Analects.

He believed that respect is like a thread that sews a society together. He taught his students that everyone – from powerful rulers to common citizens – should be treated with dignity.

When he died in 479BC, Confucius left behind many students. His teachings would continue to influence China for thousands of years.

One of his famous teachings is called the “Golden Rule”: “Do not do to others what you would not want them to do to you.”

Think about how that works in your daily life. If you do not like being teased, do not tease your classmates. If you want people to listen to your ideas, make sure to listen when they speak.

Confucius believed that when we show respect at home to our parents and siblings, it will spread to our community and beyond.

He also taught that we should never stop learning. Confucius believed he could learn something valuable from every person he met, even a child. He showed that true wisdom does not come from knowing everything. It comes from having an open and respectful mind.
