Mong Kin-yau is the English panel chairman at HHCKLA Buddhist Leung Chik Wai College in Tuen Mun. Last month, he set an ambitious goal for the school’s English Speaking Day: to create a world where the English language and China’s vibrant culture meet and mingle with the use of Young Post and Posties. The theme, English Tongues of China, sparked enthusiasm among students.
Mong said the event included topics such as traditions and landmarks, animated series like Pleasant Goat and Big Big Wolf and Boonie Bears, and China’s remarkable space exploration programme. These helped students find excitement in reading and speaking. They discovered the wonders of China while honing their English-speaking skills.
“I wanted to create a spirit of camaraderie where students eagerly conversed with one another and their teachers, exchanging their love, thoughts, and insights about these fascinating aspects of our motherland,” Mong said. The atmosphere was vibrant with laughter, curiosity, love for reading and a shared sense of discovery as students delved into China’s rich heritage.
English Speaking Day went beyond enriching dialogue; it also allowed students to embark on a unique quest for knowledge while reading to learn and learning to speak.
Mong explained that the activities aimed not only to foster growth in English reading and speaking, but also to shape his students into confident global citizens.
Through fostering a deep appreciation for their cultural heritage and gaining English fluency, he believes his students are well-prepared to thrive in an interconnected world. It was certainly a day of activities that students will never forget, and the lessons learned will last a lifetime.
