China builds deep-sea station to gather data and conduct experiments

Chinese scientists have built a deep-sea station on the ocean floor. It will work with a fleet of underwater drones to gather data and conduct experiments.

The remote-controlled station will not have any humans because it is too deep for them.

The station was put in position with the help of the Shenhai Yongshi submersible, which can dive down to 4,500 metres.

The station has lots of sensors to study life and conditions on the sea floor. It has a lithium battery that will allow the system to work for at least six months. The battery will also allow it to move around on th ocean floor.

Chen Jun, from the Institute of Deep-Sea Science and Engineering, says the station can carry out tests in the same way as a laboratory on land.
