Dogs can cry tears of joy

If you have a dog, you know the joy of coming home to be greeted by your tail-wagging friend.

But these happy dogs might be shedding more than just fur on your clothes – they might also be crying tears, according to a new study.

"We had never heard that animals shed tears at joyful times, such as reuniting with their owners," says scientist Takefumi Kikusui. He says the discovery could be a "world first".

The scientists measured the amount of tears in dogs' eyes. When dogs were reunited with their owners after six hours apart, the amount of tears in their eyes was greatly increased.

This reaction is probably because of the release of oxytocin, nicknamed the "love hormone".
