Mother’s Day is a special occasion. It is held on the second Sunday of May to honour the important roles mothers play.
While we often celebrate with flowers or breakfast in bed, this tradition has deep historical roots. The Greeks held a festival in honour of Rhea, the mother of Zeus. The Hindu festival of Durga-puja honours Durga, the mother goddess.
In the United States, the Mother’s Day holiday was started by Anna Jarvis. She wanted to fulfil her own mother’s wish to have a day that celebrated mothers. In 1914, President Woodrow Wilson declared it a national holiday.
Here are two simple ways to celebrate your mum and make her feel extra special on this day.
Customised coupons

Materials
-
paper
-
crayons, markers or coloured pencils
-
stickers or glitter (optional)
-
hole puncher
-
ribbon
Instructions
-
Cut your paper into seven small rectangles, around the size of a coupon.
-
On each piece of paper, write down one thing you promise to do on a certain day of the week. For example, “I will put my dirty clothes in the laundry basket” or “30 minutes of quiet time”.
-
Decorate the papers. Draw pictures that match the activities you’ve written.
-
Stack the papers in order and punch a hole through the top corner. Thread a ribbon through the hole and tie it in a bow to secure your pages together.
