There were stories told for things not understood
Tales that separated bad from good
From the east and the south
Told by people’s word of mouth
How Pangu parted the sky from the earth
Gaze upon the moon and squint your eyes
You might see the woman trapped within the skies
Coat your doors in red for Nian
Deadly when he leaves his den
And at Qixi, see a pair meet with magpies
Yet these stories of old are fading
Becoming tales of past, they are degrading
To false myths among the youth
Why choose legends when the truth
Is based on proof and fact, not created?
But if no one in this lifetime can uphold
All these creatures and these legends of old
Who could continue their lifespan
Stop them from getting lost to man
If this old folklore is never again told?
So, pass on these folk tales
In your mind, keep every detail crystal clear
Tell Chang E’s tragic tale at night
And Nian’s myth, which causes fright
Make folklore something the next generation holds dear
