Last month, South China Morning Post’s Young Post and Posties Editor Emily Tsang came to our school to talk about life as a reporter. I always thought that being a reporter was an easy job. It turns out I was wrong the whole time. A reporter needs to organise and summarise all of the information given. Then you need to write down your ideas and publish them in the newspaper.
Being a reporter not only requires good speaking skills, but you must also be outgoing. Moreover, you must be wise because you must think of questions to ask the people you interview.
I remember being invited to the stage to imitate an interviewee. It is pretty hard to be an interviewee as you don’t know what the reporter will ask. You have to think fast so you can respond and answer the reporter. I also noticed the reporter had difficulty thinking about what to ask.
This was a very memorable experience for me, and I have a lot of respect for reporters. They teach us more about the things happening around us. Sometimes, they would even put their lives in danger while reporting! I hope we have more talks or lectures similar to this in the future.
