Wonder by R.J. Palacio is about a boy named August who has Treacher Collins syndrome, which has disfigured his face.
After 10 years of being home-schooled, August must start middle school, and he finds that backing out is not an option. August forms a group of friends who help him realise he is a wonder.
No matter how much August tries to fit in, the world still sees him differently. Something that is interesting about the book is that some chapters are from other characters’ perspectives to see how they feel about August’s condition.
I think this book is a reminder that discrimination is everywhere. Although this book is fictional, many people suffer from depression and other issues because of discrimination. I hope this book reminds people to have more sympathy for people who are different.
