Once upon a time, there was a nine-year-old girl named Mildred. She was excited for her school camp.

On the bus ride, Mildred thought about the fun she would have and the delicious food she would eat, especially s’mores.

She turned to her best friend Enid and squealed, “I can’t stop thinking about camp! What are you excited about?”

Enid looked nervous. “I’m scared. I heard the campsite has ghosts,” she said.

“Don’t worry! Ghosts aren’t real,” Mildred reassured her.

“We don’t know that,” Enid replied dully.

Mildred, feeling empathy for Enid, said, “Even if there is a ghost, I’ll be there with you!”

Enid smiled and nodded. “You’re right! We are going to have fun!”

The two girls did not talk much more during the ride to camp, but Mildred noticed Enid looking scared as they arrived.

They soon reached the dorm room that they would share with their classmates.

Mildred and Enid needed to use the bathroom, but they didn’t know where it was.

They saw a small door and assumed it was the bathroom.

When they opened it, a weird fog appeared, and a voice said, “Hello!”

A little floating face appeared. “Please don’t run away,” it said.

When the girls screamed, the ghost said to them, “I want to be your friend.”

The ghost explained how everyone ran away from it without listening. The girls felt bad, so they said they could all be friends.

Happy, the ghost thanked them. Each day during free time, they learned more about each other.

When camp ended, Mildred woke up in her bedroom, confused. Everything had been a dream! But she felt braver and happier about making a new friend, even if it was just in a dream.
