A long time ago, a silk maker in China named Bo overheard two villagers talking about all of the wonderful things “the West” had.
That night, he dreamed of going on an adventure to the West. The next morning, that’s exactly what he did.
Bo packed all his silk and set off. As he walked, he saw a small horse with a gash on its leg. Bo led the horse to a lake, fed it and nursed its wound.
The horse’s leg healed and they set off together.
The Chinese and the Huns were fighting for control of the ancient Silk Road. Sometimes, the Huns would capture merchants and take their goods. One spotted Bo and chained him up for days.
Then, one day, Bo felt the floor rumble. “Earthquake!” he shouted. But then he realised it was his horse stomping. It reared up onto its hind legs and smashed the lock!
“Thank you,” Bo said. “I’m going to call you Fei.”
Bo and Fei trotted along happily. They reached a town. Bo took his silk to the market and set up a stall. A huge crowd appeared.
“Wow! So soft and glossy. What is it? I’ll trade you anything I have for it,” one person said.
“One by one,” Bo shouted over the crowd.
He traded all of his silk for gold, silver and diamonds. Then it was time to go home.
But as the pair travelled, a real earthquake struck.
“We’re done for!” wailed Bo.
Fei shook his head. “NEIGH! NEIGH!” He bolted across fields, dashed through forest and past grassland and soared over lakes and rivers.
At last, the two caught up with a group of heavenly horses. Fei’s friends! Together, they galloped back to China.
Bo took the horses to the Emperor. “What speedy, agile horses. Nothing like the ones we have here in China,” he said.
The Emperor wanted to buy all the horses. But Bo said, “I would like to keep one and live in the palace stable together.”
Bo and Fei moved into the palace and lived a happy life.
