Zootopia 2 has become the highest-earning animated foreign film in China. It has been successful even as people there have become less interested in movies from other places.
In the first six days of the film’s release, its local box office reached 1.95 billion yuan (HK$2.15 billion).
Zootopia 2 made up about 95 per cent of all movie ticket sales in the first weekend it was shown in China.
The original Zootopia was the most popular foreign animated film in China when it was released in 2016.
But the success of Zootopia 2 is impressive because recently, local movies in China have been doing better than Hollywood films.
This year, the Chinese animation Ne Zha 2 made more money than Pixar’s Inside Out 2. It was the most successful animated film ever. It made almost US$2 billion (HK$15.6 billion) in China.
