China curbs homework to boost student health and reduce stress

China’s Education Ministry has set up new rules to help students stay healthy, both physically and mentally. These rules include forbidding schools from giving too much homework or taking away break time.

The announcement came as officials work to lower student stress and support their mental health.

Many schools in China give a lot of homework, causing students to get less sleep and feel more anxious, experts said.

In November last year, China said schools had to limit the amount of homework students receive. They also need to provide at least two hours of physical activity for students in primary and secondary school every school day.

Kindergartens are also not allowed to use primary school teaching methods or teach what is in the primary school curriculum.

Primary and secondary schools are banned from organising any examinations for the purpose of selecting students.
