The number of Chinese students in the United States has decreased over the past year, but they are still the second-largest group of students after Indians. They also contribute a lot to the US economy, according to new data.
In the 2024-25 school year, 265,919 Chinese students studied in the US. This is a 4 per cent drop from the last school year. This information is from a report by the Institute of International Education (IIE), which is sponsored by the US State Department.
The number of Indian students went up by 9 per cent to reach 363,019 in the 2024-25 school year. Last year was the first time there were more Indian students than Chinese students in about 15 years.
Still, Chinese students contributed about US$14.6 billion (HK$113.5 billion) to the US economy in 2024, while Indian students brought in US$14.0 billion.
China is still the biggest source of undergraduate and non-degree students.
