Andre Blumberg is the creator of the Hong Kong Four Trails Ultra Challenge. It is a 298km ultra-marathon that covers four of the city’s major trails.
He has called on Hong Kong authorities to do more to protect the city’s nature.
“Hong Kong is really privileged to have these natural resources and country parks,” Blumberg said. “It’s really vital for us to preserve those areas.”
Blumberg said a quota system should be used on public holidays. Local country parks and nature-based activities have become popular recently, especially with tourists. But there are concerns about damaging fragile ecosystems and harming animals. .
Blumberg suggested that Hong Kong limit the number of people who can visit certain areas of the country parks on any given day. He pointed to national parks in the United States. Some, for example, time visits to handle overcrowding.
Countries such as France and South Africa have also used quota systems in recent years at some of their popular parks.
