A long time ago, Yemen introduced coffee to the world. Now, the country, which has faced many hardships, is sharing its coffee culture with others.
Yemeni coffee shops are opening quickly across the US. Last year, six big coffee chains that sell Yemeni drinks grew by 50 per cent. They reached 136 locations, according to Technomic, a company that studies restaurants. This number does not include many smaller chains and independent cafes that also sell coffee and tea from Yemen.
Yemeni coffeehouses are important for a few reasons. They stay open late, often until after 3am, especially during Ramadan.
They also offer a space for people to hang out. This is especially appealing for Americans who don’t want to drink alcohol.
