Difficulty: Summiteer (Level 3)
More than half of Hong Kong families who responded to a happiness survey reported a high score. Researchers said key factors for these families’ happiness included engaging in fun activities, ensuring companionship and taking time to praise each other at home.
The Jockey Club SMART Family-Link Project carried out the online poll of 4,529 residents between July and August last year. The team wanted to gauge the happiness level of families after the pandemic era. Respondents were asked to rate how happy they felt in their families on a scale of zero to 10. Ten was the highest level.
About 58 per cent of respondents gave a score between seven and 10. This suggests they have a positive relationship with their families. These groups included those with a monthly household income of HK$60,000 or above, as well as people with a tertiary-level education. Women and those aged 55 and above also had a higher score.
But researchers found money was not the sole factor behind family happiness. Caring and attentive interactions among members were also important.
Most of those who reported a high score praised, played with and communicated well with family members.
