It’s OK to tell people how you feel without feeling guilty. You should be assertive; this means being able to stand up for yourself and your beliefs in a confident and respectful way. It can help you build better relationships.
Being more assertive can also help you feel more confident. Here are some tips we hope can help:
-
Use “I” statements, but do not blame others when you talk. For example, say “I disagree” instead of “You’re wrong.”
-
Listen carefully to others to understand what they think. Being a good listener helps build supportive relationships.
-
Be honest about your feelings so others can understand you better.
-
Be polite so it is easier for people to accept it when you say no.
Remember your needs. If someone does not listen at first, calmly repeat what you want. Do not yell or fight, and do not feel guilty about standing up for yourself. It is important to take care of yourself because you cannot help others if you do not feel good.
Talk it out
-
Has someone ever said no to your request? How did that make you feel?
-
What do you do when someone asks for help, but you do not have the time or energy to help them?
