It can be hard to share your feelings. It is especially tough when you think people around you don’t understand. However, you’re not alone.

It’s OK to take small steps. Start by sharing with people you know and trust, like your friends and family. They care about you and want to hear your thoughts.

Begin with something simple, like what makes you happy or upset. For example, you could say, “I’m upset when I don’t get good grades.”

You can express deeper feelings when you feel more comfortable. You can say things like, “I am disappointed in my exam marks because I studied a lot and expected better results”.

How much you share depends on how comfortable you feel talking to people. It also depends on how they react.

We are more likely to open up if someone is respectful and understanding. If someone seems unfriendly, it’s natural to protect yourself by not telling them too much.

Sharing our thoughts can help us come up with new ideas. It can also help us see things differently and connect with others. Give it a try!

Talk it out

What are some feelings that you find difficult to express? What makes them so tough to talk about?

Who do you share your feelings with? How do they comfort you and show you they care?

This question was answered by San Hung, a counselling psychologist in private practice.
