Advice: I’m jealous of my friends who have money to do fun things!

It’s common to feel jealous if someone’s family has more money than yours.

Although you can’t do anything about your friends’ families, you can control your choices and how you feel.

Instead of being upset, focus on the fun things you can do without money. Instead of envying your friends’ adventures at new schools or expensive theme parks, spend time on things you care about, such as playing sports, reading new books or volunteering.

You could even try something new by visiting your community centre for free activities.

You can also look for ways to earn a little extra cash. Perhaps your parents will give you some pocket money if you help with simple household chores.

If this is a close friend, consider telling them how you feel. It might be embarrassing or awkward at first, but strong friendships are built on good communication. You could also suggest low-cost or free activities that you can do together!

Remember, just because you can’t do all the fun things your friends do right now, it doesn’t mean things will stay like that forever. It is also important to value the time you have with your family. There is a lot of joy to be found all around you! As they say, “The best things in life are free.”

Talk it out

  • What do you do when you’re feeling jealous of a friend? How do you get over it?

  • What are three things you enjoy doing that do not cost money? What free or low-cost activities would you like to try?
