It is normal to disagree with people. This will happen more as you get older and have stronger opinions. People who disagree with each other or argue might feel angry and say things they don’t mean. They often feel sorry about it later.

Wait until you and your dad are both calm. Then, you can tell him you’re sorry for being mean. Talk to him about what made you act that way and how sad you feel now.

If talking is hard, you can write a letter. Your dad will probably forgive you. It would be good to talk about what makes you both upset. Then, you can try to stop it from happening again.

You can show your dad you love him by giving him his favourite snack or a cup of tea. You can also spend more time together by taking a walk or watching a film.

This question was answered by San Hung, a registered counselling psychologist (HKPS) and secondary school counsellor.

Talk it out

  • What do you disagree with your parents about? How do you talk about it?

  • What do you appreciate most about your parents?
