Advice: My dad gets mad when I buy food instead of eating at home

Parents usually have good reasons for their decisions, so it’s worth talking to your dad. Photo: Shutterstock

Difficulty: Explorer (Level 1)

It sounds like your dad thinks outside food is unhealthy or more expensive. Show him that you’re not just going to McDonald’s and Circle K. Tell him you are choosing healthy options and give examples of what you eat. Let him know you’re spending the money wisely.

Ask your dad how much money you can spend each week. Before you talk to him, make a list of how much you usually spend. Include anything extra you might need that month. Show him this list and agree on a budget.

It might be that your dad wants you to eat at home because he doesn’t want to waste food. If this is the case, you need to let him know why you want to eat outside instead. Is it because you dislike the food made at home?

If he can understand why this is important to you, he might be able to come up with a solution that works for everyone.

Talk it out

  • Why might parents want you to eat at home instead of eating outside food?

  • What advice do you have for this student? Is there a way they can compromise with their father?
