Unexpected emergencies, like a fire, can happen. The sudden heat and thick smoke can be overwhelming, leaving us confused and unsure how to react. As such, it is important to know what to do if we find ourselves in this situation.

1. Stay calm and call for help

While panic may be our first response, we need to stay calm. Count to three and then try to identify the source of the smoke and call 999. Tell the operator about your location, what is on fire, and if there is anyone else in the building.

2. Get out quickly

Do not try to fight the fire or grab any of your belongings. Leave the building immediately and use the lift instead of the stairs. To do so, get low to the floor and crawl to the nearest exit.

Remember to feel the doorknob and door, and open the door slowly. Find another exit if they feel warm or if you see smoke coming around the door.

3. What to do if you can’t leave safely

Find a safe room with a window if you cannot leave the building. Shut the door, but do not lock it. If possible, cover the bottom gap of the door with a wet cloth to stop smoke from getting through. Do not try to climb or jump out of the building, and stay where you are until the firefighters arrive.
