It’s frustrating when you want to participate in class but don’t get the chance. However, it’s important to know that this probably isn’t personal. Your teacher might not even realise they’re not calling on you.
Why this happens
There could be several reasons why your teacher is not calling on you. They might have a habit of calling on the same students, or maybe they are trying to give other students a chance to speak. Sometimes, teachers miss a raised hand in a busy classroom. It is also possible that there is a miscommunication.
What to do
The best thing you can do is talk to your teacher directly. It can feel a little scary, but this is the most effective way to solve the problem.
Try to do it after class when you have a moment alone with them. You can say something like: “I feel like I have a lot to contribute in class, but that I am not being called on. Is there anything I can do to participate more?”
This shows your teacher that you are eager to learn. You can also ask for specific feedback. For example, you could ask, “What are some ways I can get more involved in class discussions?”
This conversation will help your teacher understand how you feel. It also gives them a chance to make a change. They want you to succeed and will likely appreciate that you came to them.
