Difficulty: Explorer (Level 1)
Have you ever felt upset seeing a stray animal looking for food? Or really wanted to help a classmate who seemed left out?
That strong feeling in your heart is called empathy, and it’s your superpower. It helps you understand how others feel. When that feeling makes you want to do something kind for others to make things easier for them, it’s called compassion.
So, who are you?
You are a person with a big, caring heart, and you can use it to help make your community a better place.
The first step is to think about what you care about most.
Do you love animals and want to protect them? Are you worried about kids who do not have enough food or books? Do you want to help keep our parks and beaches clean?
Hong Kong has many amazing charities, and each focuses on a different important cause. You can explore them to find what sparks your passion.
Helping does not have to be a huge, grown-up task. You can start right where you are.
You could help collect books for a children’s charity or old towels for an animal shelter. You could even simply promise to be a good friend to someone new at school.
What do you care about?
Find out what you are passionate about. Could it be animals, like pets or ones in the wild? Maybe you care deeply about the environment. Or you might really want babies and young children in need to have the same things you do. Write it down.
Then, with an adult, go to HandsOnHongKong.org or Kids4kids.org.hk to learn about volunteer opportunities in Hong Kong for children. By taking one small, kind action, you are already making a difference.
