In January, I attended my first sports day in my five years of primary school.

In my first three years, the sports days were cancelled because of Covid-19, and I missed last year’s event because of a family commitment. As this is my final year in primary school, I was eagerly looking forward to attending the sports day.

On the day of the grand event, I woke up early and reached the Sham Shui Po Sports Ground with my friend Michael at 8am. There were many events like the 100-metre relay, long jump, tennis ball throw, student-teacher relay, and the class relay.

I was surprised by my schoolmates’ determination to be on the podium regardless of their age. I saw that everyone participated in all the activities with lots of joy and enthusiasm. If we students showed the same attitude towards our academics, we would no longer see studying as a chore but, instead, as a fun-filled activity.

I was also amazed upon seeing the hard work of the sports ground workers.

I noticed that most of the janitors were probably above the age of 50, but they worked continuously with smiles on their faces. They helped us to keep the sports ground sanitised and clean at all times and never sat down to take a break. My friends and I were moved by their dedication.

We decided that the least we could do to help these elderly workers was to clean up before we left and properly dispose of our litter in the designated bins.

These are my takeaways from my school’s sports day! What are your school’s sports days like?
