Difficulty: Explorer (Level 1)

Before the internet, people went to libraries when they wanted to learn about something. The best part is that libraries offer free access to books and other resources.

Nowadays, it is easy to get a library card. You can even apply online, and it only takes a few minutes. This gives you access to e-books that you can read on a phone, computer or tablet. You can also borrow audiobooks if you prefer listening to stories.

It is easy to use the internet for research, social media, and entertainment. But if you want a more calming experience that gives your eyes a break from looking at screens all day, check out your local library. There are a lot of books to discover!

Materials

  • large box

  • construction paper

  • scissors

  • paint or markers

  • glue

  • books that you are willing to donate

Instructions

1. You are going to make a Give-and-Take Library. This means anyone can take a book to read for themselves, but they must replace it with one of their own.

2. Use glue and scissors to cover the inside and outside of your box with construction paper. You can use one colour or make it rainbow-themed. Use paint, markers, or whatever you choose to decorate. On the top or one side of the box, write Give-and-Take Library, along with instructions on how to use it.

3. Once the paint and glue have dried, fill the library with as many books as you like. Try to put in at least seven.

4. Set the box outside or near your home for others to browse. On a rainy day, you can keep it in your home or put it somewhere covered. Depending on where you live, you can keep the box out all the time or take it in during the night. Make sure to tell your neighbours about it!
