Nowadays, technology helps us stay connected to people across the world. We can message or call anyone at any time. It makes everything more convenient.

Sometimes, it is nice to slow down and be thoughtful about how you communicate with the people you care about. One way you can do this is by writing a letter!

Letters used to be the main form of communication until the previous century. Depending on how far the letter was travelling, it could take weeks or even months to arrive at the receiver’s doorstep. Today, a letter is seen as a more meaningful and thoughtful way of communicating.

You could write a letter on a computer and print it out. A better way is to hand-write it. Grab a blank sheet of paper or purchase a card from a store, and write a message inside. You do not have to mail the letter. You could deliver it by hand if you choose.

Write a future letter to your friends

Materials

  • friends to do this activity with

  • pen and paper

  • envelope and stamps

Instructions

  1. Among your friends, choose names out of a hat to see who you will write a letter to. Make sure to keep it a secret.

  2. Sit down and write the letters to each other. Remember that the letter is for the future! Maybe you can write about a future activity you want to do together, like starting a chess club, or talk about some fun things you have done recently. Make it meaningful!

  3. Choose a date to mail the letter. It could be three months from now or even two years from now. When you finally mail it, make sure that your friend has not changed their address.

  4. When you finally receive your letter, read it and show your friend your gratitude. Even a simple text message is enough to say “thank you!”

Get to know your friends’ and family’s interests

Materials

  • some friends and family members

Instructions

  1. A great way to bond with people is by getting first-hand experience with their interests and passions. Pick three to five family members and friends and ask them to list out some of their favourite hobbies.

  2. Choose one activity that you can do together. For example, maybe your friend loves tennis, painting or volunteering.

  3. Do the activity together. Make sure you ask your friend about it. How long have they been doing this? What got them interested in this activity? What is their favourite part?

  4. Do this with a few people. Later on, they can accompany you while you do some of your hobbies too!
