Magic is in the air! Many fairy tales have fortune-tellers who use crystal balls to tell the future.

In fact, many cultures used mirrored objects, pools of water, or crystal balls to communicate with gods. They were often used to help people make decisions, identify diseases and predict the future. From ancient Egypt to India, Greece, South America, North America and Australia, these cultures had some sort of fortune-telling and used tools similar to crystal balls.

Make your own crystal ball

Materials

  • glass jar

  • cotton balls

  • water

  • food colouring

  • glitter

Instructions

1. Fill your jar a little more than halfway with water. Tear apart your cotton balls and put them in the jar.

2. Sprinkle glitter into the jar. Add more water until it is filled to the top.

3. Close the lid securely. Shake carefully and enjoy!

Write your own reimagined fairy tales

Materials

  • pen and paper

  • your imagination

  • a friend

Instructions

1. You and your friend will each choose a different classic fairy tale.

2. Rewrite the fairy tale and set it in Hong Kong. For example, where would Cinderella go instead of the prince’s ball? Maybe she would attend a Christmas party in Central. What would Little Red Riding Hood meet instead of a wolf? Perhaps a boar on Victoria Peak.

3. Once you and your friend finish writing your stories, read them aloud to each other and compare!
