Artificial intelligence (AI) can do some incredible things. However, it is missing one important thing: a conscience. Technology does not have morals, but humans do! Discover how our choices shape the way we use AI responsibly through these activities.

The AI choice

When is using AI a helpful choice? Read the everyday scenarios below. For each situation, decide whether you should use AI or mark if it depends on the circumstances.

Circle the green box if you think it is perfectly OK to use AI. Circle the red box if you think using AI is a bad, unfair or unsafe choice. Circle the yellow box if you think it depends on how you use it. Be ready to explain why! Scroll down for some suggested answers.

Scenarios

  1. Brainstorming unique ideas or plot twists for a creative story assignment

  2. Asking a chatbot for specific advice on handling a complicated friendship problem at school

  3. Talking to an AI bot about your struggles so you don’t have to share with a friend, parent or teacher

  4. Asking AI to write an entire history paragraph for a school assignment and turning it in as your own work

  5. Using AI to check your essay for spelling and grammar errors after you have written it yourself

  6. Asking an AI tool to explain a difficult maths concept to you like a personal tutor

Next, read the descriptions of AI below. Tick YES if the sentence is correct, or NO if it is wrong.

  1. AI can feel happy, give you a real hug and be a true friend.

  2. AI is helpful because it can translate languages and help blind people “see”.

  3. We should let AI make our most important decisions all by itself.

  4. AI learns from the information we give it, so we must always check its work.

AI helper

Imagine you had a super-powered AI helper that could change the world. What is one good thing you would use it for? Discuss your ideas with a friend, or write about it. What problems could you have with this AI helper?
