Have you ever been ravenous, bought some street food and been absolutely stunned by how scrumptious and economical it is? Here are some fascinating facts about five different types.
Fish ball
Fish balls are believed to have originated in various regions of China, including Chaozhou, a city in Guangdong province, and Fujian province. Today, this food is enjoyed in many places around the world, including Singapore.
Siu mai
In Hong Kong, siu mai is sold as a street snack but also as a dish in dim sum restaurants. It is popular in Southeast Asian countries such as Vietnam and Thailand. In Japan, they are sometimes served with a pea on top. The meat is usually pork but can also be fish and even chicken.

Rice noodle rolls
Originating in Guangdong province, this has become a southern Chinese street food staple. Also known as cheung fun, this steamed rice noodle roll is often served with sauces such as soy, hoisin and peanut butter. It is usually topped with a handful of sesame seeds. Fillings include beef, shrimp, char siu and even you tiao, a fried bread stick.
Egg puffs
Also known as egg waffles, this street snack has about 20 oval-shaped puffs. They are made using a special mould that gives them their signature shape. Many shops in Hong Kong sell a variety of flavours, including chocolate, strawberry and cheese.
Waffles
A classic Hong Kong waffle is made with eggs and sugar and is served with peanut butter and condensed milk. Unlike other countries, Hong Kong waffles are eaten as a snack, not on a plate. Like egg puffs, they are served hot and fresh.
So the next time you get these foods, remember their legacies!
