We recommend the book Save Me a Seat by Sarah Weeks and Gita Varadarajan.
The two main characters, Ravi and Joe, were bullied by a classmate named Dillon Samreen.
Ravi moved from India to the US as his father’s job required them to relocate. He was the top student at his last school.
Joe suffered from problems with his hearing. He hated it when the environment around him was very loud.
When Ravi started school, he was sent to a teacher named Mrs Frost to improve his English. Ravi and Joe were in the same class.
Ravi believed Joe had tripped him, but in reality, it was the bully Dillon who had been tripping him and had even stolen some of his mechanical pencils.
Because of this misunderstanding, Ravi decided that Dillon would be his true friend, while he considered Joe, whom he nicknamed “Mr Big Foot”, to be a bully.
One day at lunch, Ravi walked over to Dillon’s table and sat with his friends. However, Ravi soon found out the truth about Dillon when he called him “Curryhead”.
So, the next time Dillon bullied Joe, Ravi stepped in to help. This act strengthened their friendship.
The book is titled Save Me a Seat because Joe and Ravi always save a seat for each other.
